Welcome to The Watermill guest house in the heart of Normandy
Moulin de la Houssaye is an 18th century watermill situated in the quiet Durance river valley in the heart of rural Calvados.
The Watermill holiday home borders a region of Calvados known as the Suisse Normande, so named because of its similarities to alpine terrain.
Originally a corn-grinding mill and bake house, the watermill was later used by the occupying forces in WWII as a base to service tanks. The country house has since been renovated throughout, but still retains much of its original character. The waterwheels are still in operation today and generate electrical power.
Introduction from the Holiday in Normandy host
After moving from the Loire valley to Normandy 18 years ago, Nicola moved permanently to France 25 years ago, where she and her partner renovated an old Longere ‘from scratch’ carrying out most works themselves after the Longere was sold, they moved to a Farm with 30 acres for another renovation project. They sold and moved to Calvados in 2004, taking on the old Watermill, which had been abandoned since the 1950s.
I became interested in Bikes through going to work every day at 16 years old to a Dairy farm in North Norfolk ‘only mode of transport’ as a teenager and then over the years rode, took part in Bike rallies up & down the UK, France, Holland and Belgium, rode across Europe to Turkey on a BMW R65 before selling my R65 and Honda 350 Four to raise funds for a new venture in France in 1997. My Dad was a Cafe Racer in the 60s riding his much loved Triumph Tiger 110 and my Brother a National Chopper Club rider member, engineering bespoke Bikes & Trikes for customers which featured regularly in the Bike magazine ‘Back street Heroes’.
No longer a rider as other commitments have taken over my life… Day to day running of a Construction Co, upkeep of the Mill and a small flock of Suffolk sheep. My passion for 1970s bikes is still close to my heart. It inspired me to advertise the Watermill four years ago, albeit advertising the guest house accommodation for couples since 2006, as I found few places welcomed Bikers & felt that I could.

Guest Reviews
After quite alot of planning and reviews read, we decided on the Windmill for our base, as it was in the region but perfectly placed an hour away from most places we planned on visiting. From Pégasus Bridge ( including the cafe, museum and Ranville cemetery- where the first soldier to lose his life on June 6th D-Day is buried) in Caen, Sword Beach, Omaha beach and the American Cemetery, Bayeux with the British / Commonwealth cemetery and the tapestry, Arromanches and Pointe du hoc among many other sites. We also visited Mont St Michel ( highly recommended), St Malo (old town) and Deauvillle.
This was the perfect place to enjoy the amazing roads in the countryside as we never once hit a toll, 5 miles from the nearest town (Aldi, Petrol stations, lovely bakery, takeaways and restaurants). The Accommodation was perfect with a garage for the bikes, beautiful setting in country and Nicola the host was so welcoming and helpful - thank you Nicola, hope to see you again.
The accommodation was fantastic and the garage, well what can I say..!! It was more than we could ever imagined with full use of tools. Perfect spot for touring around Normandy and surrounding areas. And what can we say about Nicola, she was fantastic, we have never felt so at home on holiday before. She was brilliant. Nicola helped us with anything we needed, including finding us a fabulous restaurant that we went to and took Nicola with us to say a big thank you for everything she did for us and the great stay we had. We also fell in love with the dog tick too.
Will definitely be retuning in the future. Claire sends her thanks to Nicola for taking me (Darren) off her hands for a week.

The charming and helpful English owner Nicola lives upstairs. The mill is on a working farm/smallholding with docile sheep and the owner's dog Tick was also very friendly. Although is was early October when we visited, it was warm enough to have dinner sitting outside in the evening. Nearby Conde Sur Noireau has a good supermarket and restaurants, plus a petrol station.
The perfect base for local walks through the stunning Suisse Normande and one-hour drives to the Normandy beaches: Arromanches and the American Cemetery are recommended. Also the slightly longer drive to the stunning Mont Saint-Michel. Not to be missed is the Thursday market in the local town, Conde sur Noireau, and the nearby Mont de Cerisy Belle Etoile with its ruined chateau.
The hard-working Nicola (a Norfolk lass) is an exceptional host, providing much appreciated provisions on arrival. Highly recommended.
Thank you Nicola for letting us stay at the Watermill we all thoroughly enjoyed it and definitely hope to be back.
Thanks Pete & Carmel
The gite is ideally placed to explore Normandy as it's location is central. Will be booking again for next year.

I'd recommend the watermill to friends for a quiet getaway or as a base for touring. Can't wait to come and stay again!
It was a perfect location for us, quiet and off the tourist routes allowing us to visit more of southern Normandy and truly "get away". My eldest enjoyed stargazing and they both loved sitting by the logfire in the evenings, then saying good morning to the sheep and of course Tiggy the dog.
Just the right size for us, not too big that the girls spread "things" all over, not too small and with everything needed for a week away. We had a great time.
The Watermill is perfectly placed for a good ride to all the D-day sites, which we covered in 2 days on the bikes, and yes, we are going back. I had never driven in France, but the French were great - both the bikers with their salute and the car drivers who pulled over upon seeing our bikes.
The local town had everything we needed to stock up, and even a kebab house (not very French I know).
Nicola was amazing & extremely helpful, both with suggestions & afterwards
It was a real pleasure to meet you and get to know the region a little. You were the perfect hostess, if I may say so. Also, waking up to the pastoral sounds of sheep and birdsong was fodder for the soul; you are so lucky to live in such a fabulous part of France!
Thank you for helping to make our holiday so special.
Nicola’s welcome was open and friendly and she had thoughtfully provided the accommodation with many basics, which was generous. She was always happy to answer questions about the area. Visitors really do need their own transport as nearest town is a few kms away however well served with excellent supermarkets on the outskirts. The surrounding countryside is inviting and picturesque.
The host Nicola is extremely welcoming and very helpful. Nothing was ever a problem and she was always happy to help. Having Nicola who is fluent in French is definitely a huge help. We even had the garage to store our motorbikes in which is an added bonus.
All in all a fantastic place and we’ll definitely be back.
Nicola showed us around the accommodation, and kindly brought us some milk, orange juice, bread and cidre. She was an extremely accommodating and friendly host. Nicola also gave us some good advice concerning the local area. We enjoyed a visit to the local market on Thursday, as well as a meal out La Licorne restuarant.
We spent the majority of our holiday exploring the region: Bayeux, Caen, the D-day beaches, Falaise (really worth visiting Falaise Castle).
Nicola was a wonderful host; so friendly and available for advice when needed.
A fabulous place- we hope to return!
From our perspective we were looking for somewhere with direct access to footpaths/tracks so that we could walk our Griffon Korthal, and preferably in a rural location but with reasonable access to a Supermarket/Boulangerie/Market.
We were also looking to source edible fungi – which we found in abundance.
This place was idyllic. No light pollution, virtually no traffic on the nearby ‘lane’ and with Conde sur Noireau about 6 miles away.
Nicola is the perfect host – invisible until you need something. The ‘gite’ has a lovely log-burning stove (with a plentiful supply of wood), large lounge space with a bathroom (with shower) and kitchen off it, and 2 bedrooms. There’s spacious car-parking immediately outside.
A really pretty area of France to explore and also within comfortable reach of the D Day beaches. Whilst here we had a problem with our car which Nicola happily helped us to sort out. We had a really lovely stay and we have been visiting France for over 20 years we thoroughly recommend. Lovely fresh welcome pack.
Thankyou Nicola hope to see you again Janet and Mark.
The Mill is situated in a valley surrounded by woodland and pastures, it also has a stream running beside it, which we walked, seeing numerous brown trout rising. I wish I had brought my short fly rod! In the evening, sitting under the most amazing blanket of stars, listening to owls and having a glass or two of wine, made us realise this was heaven.
We will most definitely be revisiting La Houssaye and Nicola.
The accommodation was just perfect for us, private and in the middle of the countryside, the only sounds being birdsong and the occasional sheep. This was our first motorbike trip abroad and The Watermill was a perfect location to ride out from each day to go and explore. The accommodation had everything that we needed, and very important for us - Nicola provided decent English tea bags (!!) - being English herself.
Nicola's accommodation is perfect for bikers (motor and pedal), walkers, birdwatchers or just for a peaceful retreat.
Normandy is well known for it's WW2 history, which is why we came here, and there are plenty of sites and museums in easy travelling distance. Nicola the owner is fabulous, so welcoming, and will bend over backwards to make sure you have an enjoyable stay.
We can't wait to return to visit our new friend in her beautiful watermill.
We were pleasantly surprised. The Mill is set in a wooded valley which is so quite that you can hear it. The accommodation is on one level containing a lounge come diner with a kitchen and two bedrooms. The accommodation is clean. Everything that you might need is available. If you are into peace and quiet and enjoy nature this is the place to stay. You also have numerous historical sites nearby. Nicola who owns the property and lives in the top floor of the Mill is a real gem.
We arrived as strangers and felt when we left we had made a friend. The Mill is excellent value a real find.
